Hard X-ray Emission and the Ionizing Source in LINERs
نویسندگان
چکیده
We report X-ray fluxes in the 2–10 keV band from LINERs (low-ionization nuclear emission-line regions) and low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies obtained with the ASCA satellite. Observed X-ray luminosities are in the range between 4×10 and 5×10 ergs s, which are significantly smaller than that of the “classical” low-luminosity Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051. We found that X-ray luminosities in 2–10 keV of LINERs with broad Hα emission in their optical spectra (LINER 1s) are proportional to their Hα luminosities. This correlation strongly supports the hypothesis that the dominant ionizing source in LINER 1s is photoionization by hard photons from low-luminosity AGNs. On the other hand, the X-ray luminosities of most LINERs without broad Hα emission (LINER 2s) in our sample are lower than LINER 1s at a given Hα luminosity. The observed X-ray luminosities in these objects are insufficient to power their Hα luminosities, suggesting that their primary ionizing source is other than an AGN, or that an AGN, if present, is obscured even at energies above 2 keV. THE ROLE OF STARS IN THE ENERGETICS OF LINERs
Imaging studies have shown that ∼ 25% of LINER galaxies display a compact nuclear UV source. I compare the HST ultraviolet (1150–3200 Å) spectra that are now available for seven such “UVbright” LINERs. The spectra of NGC 404, NGC 4569, and NGC 5055 show clear absorption-line signatures of massive stars, indicating a stellar origin for the UV continuum. Similar features are probably present in N...
متن کاملA Joint Mid-infrared Spectroscopic and X-ray Imaging Investigation of Liner Galaxies
We present a comprehensive comparative high resolution mid-IR spectroscopic and X-ray imaging investigation of LINERs using archival observations from the ISO-SWS and the Chandra Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Although the sample is heterogenous and incomplete, this is the first comprehensive study of the mid-infrared fine structure line emission of LINERs. These results have been compared ...
متن کاملAsca Observations of “type 2” Liners: Evidence for a Stellar Source of Ionization
We present ASCA observations of LINERs without broad Hα emission in their optical spectra. The sample of “type 2” LINERs consists of NGC 404, 4111, 4192, 4457, and 4569. We have detected X-ray emission from all the objects except for NGC 404; among the detected objects are two so-called transition objects (NGC 4192 and NGC 4569), which have been postulated to be composite nuclei having both an ...

In this study, some characteristics of a Mather type Plasma Focus (PF) device such as a discharge current, pinch time, ion flux and hard x-ray intensity has been investigated simultaneously in argon and nitrogen gases separately for various operating gas pressures and charging voltages of capacitor bank. It was observed that pinch phenomena was energy and pressure dependent in current sheath as...
متن کاملThe Infrared - X-ray continuum correlation in Active Galactic Nuclei
The correlation between the soft X-ray and near infrared emission from AGN is analysed using composite models. We find new evidences for differences in ranges of parameters which characterize the NLR of Seyfert galaxies and LINERs. Soft X-rays show less variability, so they are better fitted for this kind of analysis. In our models soft X-ray are emitted in the post shock region of clouds with ...
